David
Grohl began his career in a big way by being the drummer for Nirvana.
Six months after Cobain’s death, Grohl decided he wanted to begin
recording again with some of the songs he had written during his Nirvana
days.
During the recording of the self-titled debut album, Grohl played all instruments and did vocals for every track; with the exception of Greg Dulli on guitar for the “X-Static” track.
Grohl’s goals did not include being a one man band, so he recruited bass player Nate Mandel, drummer William Goldsmith, and second guitarist Pat Smear. The first major tour for the Foo Fighters took place in the Spring of 1995. They opened for Mike Watt.
Their first single was titled “This Is a Call”. Other songs following the single included “Big Me”, “For All The Cows” and “I’ll Stick Around”.
The Foo Fighters were to begin recording their next album in 1996, but Grohl and Goldsmith had a conflict of interest, which resulted in Goldsmith leaving the band. Grohl played the drums for the recording of the album The Colour and the Shape, which was released on May 20, 1997.
